Dunalley

Situated on a picturesque water-fronted property with private beach, around 45 minutes from Hobart, Dunalley House responds to the site conditions and prevailing winds.

The building form was defined by the need for protection from the strong coastal winds that lash this part of the coast. Built around a large sheltered central courtyard, the pitched roof forms have been designed to encourage southerly winds to sail up and over. This provides protection for the central outdoor courtyard accessed via the living and dining spaces.

The residence enjoys framed views to the south and west leading to the water and across to Mount Wellington in the distance.

Clad in recycled rough-sawn local timber and corrugated galvanized iron, the building responds to its rural setting and the farming vernacular of the region.
